Indigenous Cancer Care Aligning with the TRC’s Calls to Action

Info

Event Details:
This Inspiring Speakers Series event presented by APE Maintenance will focus on developing a collaborative approach to culturally appropriate cancer care for Indigenous peoples. Melinda Laboucan will share her experience setting up the Fort Good Hope community cancer group, which was done under the guidance of elders and cancer survivors, along with frontline workers and leaders in healthcare.

This approach aligns with the TRC’s Calls to Action, specifically #22:

We call upon those who can effect change within the Canadian health-care system to recognize the value of Aboriginal healing practices and use them in the treatment of Aboriginal patients in collaboration with Aboriginal healers and Elders where requested by Aboriginal patients.

Our goal is to begin this important discussion with local leaders and community members in order to collaborate to better meet the needs of Indigenous women and families as they navigate their cancer journey.
