The first annual Walk Her Way 5K is a virtual run/walk fundraiser with a goal to raise $50,000 in support of Compassion House Foundation.

Register as a team or an individual, fundraise in advance, then complete a 5 km walk or run of your choice between May 13-16, 2021. Anyone, anywhere at any fitness level is welcome and encouraged to participate.

Your support helps women battling cancer find comfort, connection, and community during a time when they need it most.

The cancer journey can be a lonely and difficult time. Imagine leaving your community, your home, and your loved ones to travel to Edmonton for cancer treatment. The financial impact is daunting, the emotional journey even more so.

Walk Her Way 5K raises critical funding for Compassion House Foundation, helping to ease the distress of the cancer journey for women through Sorrentino’s Compassion House, post-treatment programs, financial support, and reliable operations. Proceeds from the event will be used towards the greatest area of need at the time.

Join us as we step into her shoes and Walk Her Way in a small journey to help ease the distress of the cancer journey for women.

Round up your family, friends, and co-workers and Walk Her Way… together! Participating as a team increases your impact through the giving power of a group.

Know someone who’s already formed a team? Either follow the direct link and instructions from your team captain, or join your team from our event website.

Solo stroll? No problem. Register as an individual, set your pace with a fundraising goal, and Walk Her Way to the finish line by asking others to pledge you in support.

Help us reach our $50,000 fundraising goal. Donate towards the fundraiser of any participant or team you know, or make a general event donation.

There’s no registration fee; instead, we ask that each participant fundraises a minimum of $100.

Teams fundraising alongside, or in memory of, a specific woman affected by cancer are highly encouraged. There’s no limit to the amount of people who can be on a team.

I’m in! How do I get involved?

Register as an individual or a team, fundraise in advance, then complete a 5 km walk or run of your choice between May 13-16, 2021. There’s no registration fee, but we ask that participants fundraise a minimum of $100. If you’re unable to participate in the event, you can still offer your support with a donation. You can donate towards the fundraiser of any participant or team you know or make a general event donation towards our $50,000 goal.

Where is the event?

The event is taking place across Alberta, particularly Edmonton, Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray, and Jasper. That said, this is a virtual event, so you can participate from any location!

Who can participate in the event?

You don’t have to be an athlete, or even a regular walker or runner, to participate. Anyone, anywhere at any fitness level is welcome and encouraged to participate.

Is it a race with winners?

This is meant to be a fun, non-competitive event with no official rankings or prizes. We’re more concerned about bringing together the community in a collective cause: supporting women battling cancer. Anyone who commits to step up and Walk Her Way is a winner to us!

Where do I complete my walk or run?

It’s up to you! Since this is a virtual event taking place across different days and locations, there is no official event route. Choose your favourite trail or, if you don’t have one, we have some suggestions for Edmonton, Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray, and Jasper under Trail Maps.

How do I know if I’ve gone 5 km?

All of our trail suggestions are 5 km in length. If you follow your own route, you can use popular apps such as Strava, Runkeeper, or Map My Run to keep track of your distance.

Do I have to walk or run the full 5 km?

It should be your goal to complete the event as it was designed― a 5 km walk or run―but it’s not a requirement. You can participate through another indoor or outdoor activity (biking, running, swimming… whatever you prefer!), a shorter distance, a longer distance… or no distance at all! What’s most important is that you commit to the cause and do your best to fundraise and move your body. We’re all in this together!

Can I walk or run with other people?

Yes! You can sign up and fundraise as a team, and physically complete your walk or run during the event period separately or together. If you’re together, be sure to follow all COVID-19 restrictions for your area to prevent the spread and keep everyone healthy and safe. There’s no limit to the amount of people who can be on a team.

How much do I have to fundraise?

We ask that participants fundraise a minimum of $100. If you do so by April 2021, you’ll receive a commemorative event item and SWAG box.

How do I ask someone for a donation?

You should tailor your ask based on the person and the nature of your relationship. Always make sure to highlight your personal connection to the cause and send them the direct link to your fundraising page. Check out the Sample Language in our Event Guide to help you get started.

What do I do when someone donates to my fundraiser?

Say thank you! Check out the Sample Language in our Event Guide to help you get started. We take care of the rest.

How are the funds raised used?

Proceeds from the event will directly support Compassion House Foundation in its mission to ease the distress of the cancer journey for women. Funds may be allocated towards Sorrentino’s Compassion House, financial aid, post-treatment programs or services, and/or general operations―whatever is the greatest area of need at the time.

Will I receive a tax receipt?

All donations of $25 or more will receive a tax receipt.

Embrace IT – Health + Fitness

My journey began in 2008, when I started my degree in Physical Education at Grande Prairie Regional College, later graduating at the University of Alberta. In 2013, I became a CSEP Certified Personal Trainer. Health and fitness have become my passion, and I believe in the necessity for an active lifestyle, encompassing a balance of all the compulsory components of fitness.

In 2018, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since then, I have really taken a vast interest in the importance of physical activity and the effects it has on cancer patients. I have been recently taking courses to better my knowledge in this area, and I cannot wait to offer some new programs in our community for those diagnosed with cancer. I have come a long way in my journey, and I am grateful to be able to extend my passion to others!

Emma Ford
Ford Fitness Co.

I’m a registered nurse and personal trainer. My current focus is within Public Health Nursing and health promotion, which pairs well with my long-time passion for health and fitness. I’ve spent over 12 years learning, practicing, and loving many styles of exercise, physical activity, and sports, along with their unique benefits. I believe the key to living a healthy lifestyle incorporates all aspects of health, along with finding ways to move that you love. I believe in the basics: focusing on balanced nutrition, habit development, and long-term goal mindset. So much of the fitness industry focuses on aesthetics and promises of short-term, unrealistic results.

My goal is to challenge others to think long-term―to think beyond aesthetics to the well-known benefits of taking care of ALL aspects of your health. My goal is to help others reach their goals using a personalized lifestyle health approach… and to enjoy the process!

I’ve been promoting the healthy life for over a decade as a passionate fitness instructor, online nutrition and mindset success coach, and soon-to-be personal trainer. My mission is to empower others to live life with passion and purpose by providing solutions for nutrition, weight loss, and athletic performance to transform health, self worth, and career potential of my clients. I am no stranger to fundraising. I was heavily involved with Relay for Life for many years as event entertainment, participant, and member of top fundraising teams. I absolutely love that these fundraising events create a community before, during, and after cancer treatment, so I’m extremely excited to be a Fitness Champion for this event.
